All women who want a baby or have recently discovered they are going to be mothers should immediately consult the doctor and learn whether to include folic acid in their diet or take B-vitamin supplements. The folic acid is an essential part of the B complex, probably the most important for the formation of the human embryo. Without enough folic acid, there is the risk of neural tube birth defects and other health problems for both mother and child.
Without folic acid there is no new cells formation or maintenance, since this is a crucial element in periods of rapid cell division and growth. Furthermore, folate is necessary in the DNA replication and in the production of natural and normal red blood cells, thus preventing anemia. Studies also show the importance of this vitamin in the preservation of the DNA health, without which cancer cases would be a lot more numerous. Consequently, infants, children or adults, we all need a proper quantity of folic acid for proper body functionality.
In a regular diet, folic acid comes from spinach, turnip greens, cereal products, beans and peas, as well as other fruit and vegetables consumed in large intakes every day. In order to prevent B-9 deficiencies, many country governments have decided and applied the measure of fortifying the bread and flour on the market with folic acid. Besides the positive effects it has for the mother and child during the pregnancy months, folic acid has a good effect on people who suffer from heart attacks for instance. Natural folic acid intakes are obviously preferable to supplements, but are they enough for the needs of a growing baby?
Mention should be made that the need for this vitamin is higher during the first three months of pregnancy. Fresh dark-leaved vegetables are the ones you should include in your diet as they contain the highest amount of folic acid in the vegetable world. They are closely followed by fresh orange juice or strawberries, so, making such fruit part of your regular diet is the best means to receive the ideal daily quantity of B-9 vitamin.
